Dear Sisters and Brothers,
April 28, 2008 marks the 24th anniversary of the National Day of
Mourning for workers killed or hurt by workplace injuries or disease.
The Canadian Labour Congress, who were the authors of this initiative in
1984, have marked this special day with the theme of “Mourn for the
Dead, Fight for the Living – Now more than ever!” It is very encouraging
to see that this special day is now celebrated around the world from
Azerbaijan to Zambia with more involvement being seen each and every
year.
Unfortunately workplace injuries and fatalities continue to grow in
Canada especially when any workplace death or injury is preventable. The
Unions are collectively asking for better enforcement of existing
legislation but we are not seeing the action that is needed and we must
continue to push the legislators to make change.
Please take a moment to remember those who have been killed or hurt in
the workplace and resolve to make every workplace safer for everyone.
Sincerely and In Solidarity,
D.J. Shewchuk
President
